The department started functioning in 1987 with the star of MBBS course, P.G. Degree started in 2011. The department was accorded the permission by State Government for conducting independent Medico-legal Autopsies at BLDE A’s Shri B.M.Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Center in 1996

In year 2006, Department was started Medico-legal expert and consultant for Bagalkot Districts. Since then all the faculty members render expert opinion service under the Professor & Head of Department to Bagalkot District.

The department has conducted 5 Mock Trial in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018,  Department hosted CME in 2013 with guest lecturer having been delivered by eminent person to students and staff. Faculties of the department have been invited to deliver guest lecturers in the year 2011, 2014 & 2017.

The department has hosted State conference (KAMLSCON 2019), 27th Annual State level conference of Karnataka Medico-legal Society in 2019

Faculties of the department have held the various position in the subjects Academic Associations / Societies of State and National level like President of Karnataka Medico legal Society, Vice President, Secretary of KAMLS.

The department has established Poison Detection Centre in 2013. It also aims to get NABL recognition for its Poison Detection Centre.

The poison information/Detection  center

The poison Detection  center is a specialized unit providing information on prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of poison and hazard management. Most of the developed and many developed countries have well established poison control centers with poison information service, patient management facility and analytical laboratory The center provides toxicological information and advice on the management of poisoned patients adapted to the level of the enquirer. The basis of this service are the databases on poisoning, drug reactions and also continuous and systematic collection of data from the library. This information service is available round the clock.
