Overview

Established in 1987, our Department of Microbiology has evolved into a leader in medical education and research. Initially launching with the UG course in MBBS and a robust intake of 200 seats, the department expanded to include PG courses in 2001 and earned PG recognition by MCI in 2005. Key milestones include the establishment of a NABL-accredited State Reference Laboratory for HIV testing in 2005, the launch of the Ph.D. program in 2010, the initiation of the MSc. Medical Microbiology program in 2012, the NACO-sponsored Viral Load Testing Laboratory in 2018, and the NABL-accredited Molecular Biology Laboratory in 2020. With a dedicated team of 7 teaching faculty, 23 non-teaching staff, and comprehensive postgraduate programs—including 2 MD and 4 Ph.D. seats—the department remains committed to advancing medical microbiology research and producing highly skilled healthcare professionals.

Our Vision

To become globally competitive Centre of excellence in infectious disease, teaching, diagnosis and research.

Our Mission

To produce next generation graduates with sound knowledge of basic and clinical microbiology. To produce highly skilled & competent microbiologist to face emerging infectious disease threats.

Research

Our Microbiology Department drives innovation in the study of microbial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and diagnostic methodologies. Leveraging state‑of‑the‑art facilities—including the NABL‐accredited Molecular Biology Laboratory and the NACO‐sponsored Viral Load Testing Laboratory—we conduct cutting‑edge research that spans HIV diagnostics, emerging pathogen epidemiology, and molecular mechanisms of infection. Our interdisciplinary team collaborates on translational projects that not only advance scientific knowledge but also improve patient care and public health outcomes. With a robust research infrastructure and a commitment to quality and innovation, our department consistently contributes to high‑impact publications and the development of novel diagnostic tools in medical microbiology.
