General Medicine

The Department of Medicine, firmly believes that a medical student who passes out of this department in particular and the Institution in general should have all the qualities to make him/her fit to practice as a basic doctor as well as to infuse into him/her self-motivated tendency towards the logical clinical approach and research.

For undergraduates MBBS is the basic qualification, the students feel it difficult standing at the crossroads in selecting their future career. Hence the student should be exposed during his/her undergraduate career in academic research and ever related extracurricular activities.

To prepare him/her for the above objective student is exposed to various exercises at the departmental level.

Each postgraduate student is to be trained so that he can be a good consultant with a good clinical acumen and research outlook in PG student we look a good teacher as well.

We believe that each one whether he is a teacher or a student is a student of Medicine for the entire life; hence teachers are also exposed to CMEs Workshops, Departmental Meetings clinical as well as administrative. The teachers' activities like writing papers publishing them in journals and presenting at different conferences are encouraged.

Department of General Medicine

The Department of Medicine was started on the new building of the hospital and research center in 1988 when 26 students passed first phase. This batch with all its shortcomings in clinical materials could have 88.5% passing. The Department of Medicine shifted many times during early phase of hospital construction, now it is in second floor of hospital since 2003.

Prof K S Jayadevappa was the first Head of the Department. For a brief period Prof. M V Divekar, was heading the Department, from 1993 April, Dr S B Patil was heading the Department. From 2004 March to 2012 August, Dr M S Biradar was Head of Department then he is promoted as Principal of BLDE (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY)’s Shri B M Patil Medical College, Vijayapura. Since August 2012 Dr. M S Mulimani is heading the Department. Dr M S Biradar is now heading BLDE (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY) as Vice Chancellor.

The Department under the chairmanship of Dr C R Bidri, Ex-Dean and Dr. S. B. Patil as the organizing secretary, successfully hosted 7th Karnataka API & CSI conference. More than four hundred delegates participated. Department hosted KAPICON-2015 and State level Mid Term Geriatric Conference in 2011 and 2016. The Department is conducting Diabetic Clinic since 1989. It has organized many CMEs and Workshops and Guest Lectures. The Research Cell was the brainchild of Dr S B Patil and he was the secretary of the cell for a period of two years during which all the research projects were compiled in a book and were meticulously followed during those two years.

Department of General Medicine

The Department has a well equipped ICCU, CCU, Tread Mill, Echocardiography and for teaching purpose the Department has a Seminar Room with audiovisual equipments.

The Department regularly conducts Departmental meeting, subject seminars, journal clubs, mortality conferences and clinical meeting for Post Graduate Students. Regular Quiz Competitions, Drawing Competitions and World Days of Important diseases are organized for both UG and PG students. As innovative method of teaching Image Classes are taken for undergraduate students.

The students are given regular OPD teaching as well as bedside teaching apart from didactic lectures. It has got its own tutorial hall. Students are taken for regular health checkup camps.

With the joining of Prof. P. V. Prabhakar Rao, the Department of TB & Chest, which was so far under Department of Medicine, was transferred to him. The Department of Medicine, understanding with District Tuberculosis Centre started distributing free TB drugs, every Wednesday. Now RNTCP centre started distributing antitubercular drugs daily at our Hospital.

The teachers apart from teaching the students also engage in research work and have presented papers at State, National and International level. They also participate in extra-curricular activities like sports and social service.
