SURGIFEST - POSTGRADUATE INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE / PG MOCK EXAM - 2024” held on: 18TH AND 19TH OCTOBER 2024

The days 1st event after Breakfast and Registration was a Lecture by Dr Vijaya Patil, Prof. & unit head, BLDE(DU) SBMPMCH from 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM on “Tips to prepare for the Final exam”, which was moderated by Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy & Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha. Following the insightful lecture, the 1st  Long case discussion of Carcinoma Breast by Dr. Sumaya PG student from AMCH, Vijayapura from 9:30 – 10:30 AM was held, which was moderated by Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin, Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha & Dr. Nishikant Gujar.

After which there was an Inauguration ceremony from 10:30 – 11:00 AM where dignitaries such as DR. ARUN C. INAMDAR, HON’BLE Pro-Vice-Chancellor, BLDE(DU); DR. ARAVIND V. PATIL, Principal, SBMPMCH & RC, BLDE(DU) Vijayapura; DR. MANJUNATH S KOTENNAVAR, Organising Chairman, Prof & HOD. Dept. Of Surgery; DR. RAMAKANTH BALOORKAR, Organising Co-Chairman/ Secretary, Vijayapura City Branch, KSC-ASI; DR. DAYANAND BIRADAR, Organising Secretary / Associate Prof. Dept. Of Surgery; DR. RAJGOPAL SHENOY - Chairman Elect, KSC-ASI & Associate Dean (Academics), KMC MANIPAL; DR. GURUSHANTAPPA YALAGACHIN - Principal, KMCRI, Hubli, graced the stage and inaugurated the event by Digital lighting of lamp. Dr. Arun C. Inamdar, Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy and Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin greeted the audience & spoke on the importance of SURGIFEST/ PG Mock Exam.

Following the inauguration ceremony, a 2nd Long case discussion of Mass Per Abdomen (Pseudocyst of Pancreas) was taken up by Dr. Neha Babar, PG from BLDE(DU), SBMPMCH and was moderated by Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy, Dr. Aravind V Patil & Dr. Prasad Sasanur, Surgical Gastroentrologist / Assoc. Prof. from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. After this, there was a 2nd Lecture by Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy on the topic “Mass in the epigastric region” from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM, which was moderated by Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin & Dr. M B Patil Prof of Surgery/ Vice-Principal (Clinical). Subsequently, a 3rd  Long case discussion of Multinodular goitre was taken up by Dr. Aksa, PG student from AMCH, Vijayapura from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM, which was moderated by Dr. Laxman Ahirsang, Prof. & I/C HOD Dept. of Surgery, Ashwini Medical College, Solapur, Dr. M. B. Patil & Dr Anand Zalaki, Prof. DHV.  After an insightful afternoon, we broke for lunch from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

The post-lunch session was started by a 3rd Lecture by Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin from 2:30 PM to 3:00 PM, where he discussed “Thyroidectomy through a video presentation. This session was moderated by Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy, Dr. Aravind V Patil & Dr. Jyoti Karegoudar. Following the lecture, there was a discussion on various surgical instruments by PGs: Dr. Rohan, Dr. Vishwateja, Dr. Priyatma, Dr. Akshay, PG’s of BLDDE(DU), SBMPMCH which Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy, Dr. Jyoti Karegoudar, Prof. & HOD Dept. Of Surgery, GIMS, Gadag & Dr. Vijaya Patil moderated. After that, there were 2 Short case discussions by Dr. Saket PG of BLDDE(DU), SBMPMCH and Dr. Madhusudan PG from DHV from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM, which Dr. Ravikumar Choudhari, Prof. of Surgery, AMCH, Dr. Ramakant Baloorkar & Dr. Rajkumar Hiremath Prof. DHV moderated. Finally, the day was concluded with the 4th  Case discussion of Diabetic foot with PVD by Dr Ashwin Siddesh PG from BLDE(DU), SBMPMCH from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, which Dr. Jyoti Karegoudar, Dr. M S Kotennavar & Dr. Sushila Garag, Prof. of Surgery, AMCH moderated.

DAY 2: 19/10/2024

The second day started with an insightful 4th Lecture by Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha on the topic HOW TO FACE VIVA VOCE” from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM, which was moderated by Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin & Dr. Vijaya Patil, there was a genuinely interactive session where students got cleared their doubts and fears while facing a viva voce. Following this, there was a discussion on X-rays and specimens from 9:00 to 10:00 AM, where Dr. Karthik, Dr. Srihari ( PG from BLDE) and Dr. Meher (PG from AMCH) participated, which Dr. Gurushantappa Yalagachin, Dr. Eshwar Kalburgi, Prof. & HOD, Dept. of Surgery, SNMC, Bagalkot & Dr. Dayanand Biradar moderated. After this, 2 Short cases were presented by Dr. Prasad and Dr. Irfan from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, which Dr. Eshwar Kalburgi, Dr. M.B.Patil & Dr Laxman Ahirsang moderated. Subsequently, there was a 5th Lecture by Dr. Chetan Hosakatti, a Vascular Surgeon from Hubli, on “LIMB SALVAGE IN ISCHEMIC DIABETIC FOOT ”  from 11:00 to 11:30 AM, which was moderated by Dr. Shrishail Metgud, Prof. & HOD, Dept. of Surgery, KLE(DU), JNMC, Belagavi & Dr. M S Kotennavar. After this insightful talk, from 11:30 to 12:30 PM there was an OSCE session where Dr Narendra Ballal, Dr. Naveen, Dr. Priyatma and Dr. Akshay actively took part and was moderated by Dr. Jyoti Karegoudar, Dr. Ramakant Baloorkar & Dr. Nishikant Gujar, Prof. of Surgery, AMCH . Lastly, there was 5th  Long case discussion from 12:30 to 1:30 PM by Dr. Yashaswini PG of BLDDE(DU), SBMPMCH, which Dr. Shrishail Metgud, Dr. Girish Kullolli, Dr. Anand Zalaki & Dr. Sanjeev Rathod moderated. The event was concluded with Valedictory note by Dr. Ramakanth Baloorkar followed by National anthem.

Basic Surgical Skills and Cadaver Lab Workshop” held on 25/10/2024

As a part of Academic activity of the Department, “Basic Surgical Skills and Cadaver Lab Workshop” was arranged for Interns, by Department of Surgery on 25-10-2024, Friday from 9-00 Am to 5-00pm, at Advanced Skills Laboratory and Cadaver Laboratory of  BLDE (DU) Shri. B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Vijayapura.

Incharge of Unit – II Dr. Manjunath S Kotennavar, Professor & HOD, welcomed the intern delegates and explained the importance of Skills Lab/ Cadavar Lab training. Dr. Veena G. M., Senior Resident, briefed the partcipants on Universal health precautions and demonstrated Gowning, Gloving and Universal Precautions. Dr. Pradeep Jaju, Assistant Professor, demonstrated various types of Dressings and Bandages. Dr. Sharanabasu M, Senior Resident, ENT Dept. demonstrated Mastoid Dressing, Dr. Sahebagouda Patil, Asst. Professor, Dept of Orthopedics demonstrated various types of Splints. Dr. Sanjeev Rathod, Asst. Professor, demonstrated various methods of Knotting and Suturing Techniques. This was followed by an interactive session of question and answering, with hands on training for various dressings, bandages and suturing/knotting techniques under supervision of Faculty and PGs of Surgery Unit 2, ENT and Orthopedic Surgery Teams.

In the afternoon from 2:30 to 5:00 PM, workshop was conducted at Cadaver Lab. Surgical procedures like Tracheostomy, ICD tube Insertion, Abdominal incisions, Suturing, Resection and Anastomosis of Bowel and Orthopedic Plating were demonstrated by the Faculty and PGs and Interns were given hands on training.

29 Interns actively participated in the Skills Lab and Cadaver Lab Workshop. PGs of Surgery Unit 2, Dr. Narendra Ballal, Dr. Saket P. Shetty, Dr. Divyang G. B,  Dr. Parikh Smit, Dr. Alljin Sanjoe P - Dept. of Surgery, Dr. Naveenkumar Reddy - PG of Orthopedic Dept., Dr.Tomin Thomas - PG of ENT Dept. assisted in the smooth conduct of workshop.  E-certificates of participation were handed over to the participants and resource persons. Appreciation awards were given to 4 Interns selected for their keen interest / observation and good skills. High tea was arranged.

“FREE CANCER SCREENING AND AWARENESS CAMP” HELD ON: 15/10/2024

As a part of extension activity of the department, FREE CANCER SCREENING AND AWARENESS CAMP” was conducted by Surgery Unit-III Staff association with Department of OBGy , on 15/10/2024, Tuesday from 9-00am to 5-00pm, at OBG OPD Room No : 2  and General Surgery OPD, B.L.D.E Hospital, Vijayapura.

On 15/10/24, Saturday an Awareness Programme on Breast Cancer Prevention was conducted for The programme was presided by Dr. M.B Patil, Vice principal, Shri B.M Patil Medical College and Hospital; Dr. Rajesh M Honnutagi, Medical Superintendent, BLDE Hospital; Dr. Manjunath S. Kotennavar, Professor of Surgery, HOD; Dr. Vijaya L. Patil, Professor Of Surgery, Programme Co-ordinator and Head of Medical Education Unit; Dr. Surekha Hippargi, Head of Department of Pathology; Dr. Rajashekar Muchchandi, Head of Department of Radiology; Mrs. Kavitha, In-charge Principal Of Shri B.M. Patil Institute of Nursing Sciences. Pre-test questionnaires about Breast Cancer Awareness was given to 130 B.Sc Nursing Students and their knowledge was assessed through google form.

Dr. Vijaya L. Patil, Professor, Department of Surgery and programme coordinator gave a talk on, Breast Cancer Awareness and the need for Breast Cancer Screening and .early signs of Breast Cancer.  She also explained about preventive strategies, importance of Breast Cancer Screening, the different modalities of Screening, when to screen  and whom to screen,  people who are at risk, the ways to do self-examination of the breast, the benefits of Triple Assessment of Breast Lump and how to spread awareness for the same. Dr. M.S. Kotennavar then concluded the event, encouraging the students to spread awareness about Breast Cancer to the family members and in their future practice.

A free Clinical Breast Examination and Screening Programme was conducted for all the female employees of the hospital at Surgery OPD, Shri B.M. Patil Medical College and Hospital from 9 AM to 5 PM on 25/11/23, Saturday. Free Screening Mammography were done for all female employees above 40 yrs. Free Sonomammography were done for individuals with palpable lumps below 40 years of age. Free Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology was done for individuals with palpable lumps.

A total of 55 females were examined and were educated about the ways to conduct self-examination of breast at home, the early signs of breast cancer, when to meet the doctor, the need for screening in above 40 age group, and 35 individuals out of the 55 examined underwent free breast screening mammography.

On 15/10/24 Tuesday an Awareness Programme was conducted for general public in OBG OPD, Shri B.M Patil Medical College and Hospital. The programme was presided by Dr. Shrikant Ravichandran, Consultant medical Oncologist, HCG NMR Cancer Centre, Hubballi ; Dr. Manjunath S. Kotennavar, Professor of Surgery, HOD; Dr. Vijaya L. Patil, Professor of Surgery, Dr. Shailesh Kannur, Ass. Professor of Surgery, Dr. Sanjeev S. Rathod, Ass. Professor of Surgery, Dr. Rajshree Yaliwal, Professor of OBG; Dr. Shivshankar Ajur, Professor of ENT;

Dr. Shrikant Ravichandran officiated the programme by cutting of the ribbon ceremony and Dr. Vijaya L. Patil, Professor, Department of Surgery addressed the gathering, explained about the importance of Breast Cancer, Uterine and Cervical cancer, Oral cancer Awareness and the need for Screening, the different modalities of Screening, when and whom to screen, the people at risk and how to spread awareness for the same.

A free consultation programme was conducted for all the female patients at OBG OPD, Shri B.M. Patil Medical College and Hospital from 10 AM to 4 PM on 15/10/24, Tuesday. Free Screening Mammographies, Paps smears and other investigations were provided on concessional basis for all female patients above 40 yrs. Free Sonomammographies were done for individuals with palpable lumps below 40 years of age and those with positive screening Mammographies. All female employees were educated about the importance of awareness about Breast Cancer and the need for screening for the same in above 40 age group and at-risk individuals.

A total of 89 individuals were examined and were educated about the ways to conduct self-examination of breast at home, the early signs of breast cancer, uterine and cervical cancer and oral cancer, when to meet the doctor, the need for screening in above 40 age group, and how to delineate the individuals who are at an increased risk. In this programme, 61 individuals out of the 89 examined underwent Free Breast Screening Mammography and 38 patients underwent Paps smear.

Guest Lecture on “Role of Chemotherapy in Hepatobiliary Malignancies”

As part of the academic activities of the Department, a Guest Lecture by Dr. Shrikanth Ravichandran, MD, DM, ECMO Consultant Medical Oncologist at HCG NMR Cancer Centre, Hubli, on the "Role of Chemotherapy in Hepatobiliary Malignancies" was arranged by the Department of General Surgery. This event took place in the Department Seminar Hall at BLDE (DU) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & R.C. Vijayapura on October 15, 2024, from 12:00 noon to 12:30 PM.

Dr. Narendar Ballal, Junior Resident, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sanjeev Rathod, Assistant Professor of Surgery, chaired the session and introduced the resource person, Dr. Shrikanth Ravichandran. He spoke about the vital role of Chemotherapy in managing hepatobiliary malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Dr. Ravichandran discussed various treatment options, emphasizing the importance of personalized regimens that incorporate newer drug formulations. Special attention was given to tailoring treatments for immunocompromised patients and those positive for Hepatitis C virus (HCV) or Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), highlighting the need for careful monitoring to mitigate risks. His insights underscored the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach to optimize outcomes for patients facing these complex conditions.

This fruitful and informative session was attended by Dr. M. S. Kotennavar, Professor & HOD, Dr. M. B. Patil, Vice Principal, Dr. Vijaya Patil Dr. Ramakanth Baloorkar Professors, Dr. Shailesh Kannur, Dr. Vijaykumar Ishwarappagol, Dr. Aniketan K. V. Assistant Professors, Dr. Shivaraj Mangyal, Dr. Avinash Hanchinal, Dr. Arpit Agrawal Senior Residents, Postgraduates, and Interns from the Department of Surgery at BLDE (DU) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & R.C. Vijayapura. A total of 36 members attended the program, which benefited both staff and students.

“Skills Lab Workshop held on 28/09/2024

B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Vijayapura.

Dr. Vijaya Patil, Professor & Head of Unit – III Dr. Girish Kullolli Professor, Dr. Ramakanth Baloorkar Professor, Dr. Deepak Chavan Assoc. Professor. Dr. Vijaykumar Ishwarappagol, Asst. Professor, Dr. Arpit Agrawal  Senior Resident were present.

Dr. Girish Kullolli Professor of Surgery, gave Lectures and Demonstration on various Basic Surgical Skills and Hands on Training and Dr. Vijaykumar Ishwarappagol, Asst. Professor Gave Lecture with Demonstration on Gowning and Gloving.

Dr. M. Viswateja, Dr. Yashaswini T. Dr. Linette Pearl. M. Dr. Venkataramana, Dr. Dheeraj. Postgraduate Students of the Department of Surgery conducted the Skills Lab Workshop smoothly and they assisted for the demonstration of various Gowning, Gloving, Knotting/Suturing Techniques.

25 Interns actively participated in the Skills Lab workshop between 9-00 am to 5-00pm.

“WORLD RABIES DAY CELEBRATION” ON 28-09-2024

Department of General Surgery had organised “World Rabies Day” awareness programme at BLDEA’s High School, Ukkali on Saturday 28-09-2024 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM .

Shri. D V Mathpati teacher welcomed the gathering. High School student Ms. Asha sang the invocation song . The programme was inaugurated by the dignitaries on the dias by watering the plant. Dr. Manjunath Savanth , Assistant Professor, Department of General Surgery, talked about the importance of World Rabies Day. He presented PPT. presentation on the etiopathogenesis of Rabies, lifecycle of Rabies virus , clinical features, treatment including pre exposure prophylaxis for high risk individuals and post exposure prophylaxis for rabid /suspected rabid dog/other animal bites and explained the myths about Rabies , insisted on anti-rabies vaccination and timely treatment against Rabies. He told Rabies is a deadly disease , which can be prevented 100% with timely intervention , as well mortality is 100% if treatment is delayed and once the patient develops symptoms of Rabies. Principal of the BLDEA’s High School, Shri S. S. Navi Principal thanked BLDE (DU) Shri B M Patil Medical College authorities for conducting the awareness programme in their College.

At the end of the programme, High School students had good interaction on Rabies with Dr. Manjunath Savanth, Shri S. S. Navi Principal and Sanjeev Khan Gowdar anchored the programme and presented Vote of Thanks.

About 80 students, 10 teachers of BLDE (DU) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College, Vijayapura & BLDEA’s High School Ukkali, PGs from Department of Surgery Dr. Eswar M. and Dr. Parik Smith attended the programme.

World Patient Safety Day

Department of General Surgery has organised “World Patient Safety Day” awareness programme at BLDEA’s College of Nursing, Tikota, on Tuesday 17-09-2024 from 11:00 AM to 1: 00 PM.

Shri. Iranna Nippani Teacher welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by the dignitaries on the dias by watering the plant. Dr.Dayanand Biradar, Assoc. Professor. Dr. Avinash Hanchanal, Senior Resident in the Dept. of Surgery and Dr. Prakash Siddapur, Principal BLDEA’s College of Nursing, Tikota. Mrs. Basalingamma Hayal, Asst. Professor & HOD of Medical & Surgical Nursing and Programme Co-odinator were present.

Dr. Dayanand Biradar Spoke to Nursing students on how to follow and be aware about Patient Safety Dr. Avinash Hanhanal explained International patient safety guidelines and spoke about safety, preventive guidelines to nursing students.

Dr. Dayanand Biradar, Assoc. Professor of Surgery spoke and interacted with students about patient safety, care and participation of nursing students in learning and practice. Mrs Basalingamma Hayal, thanked BLDE (DU) Shri B M Patil Medical College authorities for conducting the awareness programme in their college and presented Vote of Thanks.

About 80 to 100 School students, 10 teachers of Medical College and Nursing College attended the programme.

Cadaver Laboratory Session was organized on Anatomy of Upper Limb”

Cadaver Laboratory Session was organized on “Anatomy of Upper Limb”. The activity was conducted by the Staff members of Department of Surgery on: 18/09/2024 (Wednesday) between 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at Anatomy Dissection hall, Department of Anatomy of BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura.

The cadaver laboratory session was conducted for postgraduates of Department of General Surgery. Dr. Dayanand Biradar, Asso. Professor, Co-Coordinator, welcomed Dr. Sandhya Yatagiri Professor, Department of Anatomy.

Dr. Sandhya Yatagiri. Professor of Department of Anatomy demonstrated in great detail with simultaneous interaction with Postgraduates. As it was a very interactive session, it was very helpful for the postgraduate students to understand the detailed Anatomy of upper limb including Brachial plexus, Muscles of arm, muscles of flexor and extensor compartment of forearm, Anatomy of wrist, anatomy of hand, Arterial supply and Venous drainage of upper limb, Nerve supply of upper limb and various disorders like Carpal tunnel syndrome, Erbs palsy, Klumpke’s palsy. ”. It was an eventful program.

GUEST LECTURE OF “PRINCIPLES OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY”

As a part of academic activities conducted by Department of General Surgery, a Guest Lecture was arranged on “PRINCIPLES OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY” given by Dr. Jagannath Dixit, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist on 30th July 2024. The event took place in the Medical Education Unit Hall, located on the 2nd floor at BLDE (DU) Shri B M Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Center, Vijayapura.

The formal function started with introduction of the dignitaries present in the hall for the Guest Lecture by Dr. RDS Vaishnavi, which was followed by introduction of Dr. Jagannath Dixit by Dr. Sanjeev Rathod Asst. Professor. He also introduced the chairpersons for the session Dr. Ramakanth Baloorkar Professor and Unit Head, Department of General Surgery and Dr. Rajashree Yaliwal Professor and Unit Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The Guest Lecture was attended by varied senior faculty and dignitaries Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha Dean Faculty of Medicine and Professor Department of General Surgery Dr. M.B Patil Vice Principal (Clinical) along with entire Staff and Postgraduates of Department of General Surgery and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr . Jagannath Dixit gave a lecture on “Principles of Surgical Oncology” starting with introduction and a role of Surgical Oncologist in a varied setup, he also emphasized on the newer techniques required for diagnosing various cancers & management. He highlighted the need for skills in Minimal Access Surgery for operating various carcinomas. His vast expertise in the field of Surgical Oncology showed various procedures through videos which had various major surgeries such as Laparoscopic APR and AR, Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. The need for Robotic Surgery its advantages and disadvantages were also explained by him as in this era of advancement the postgraduates must know the open, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeries.

Towards the end the session had varied question asked by the faculties and postgraduates following Dr. Jagannath Dixit was felicitated by the eminent faculty and chairpersons for his work and guidance in the field of Surgical Oncology.

The function concluded with a valedictory ceremony and Vote of Thanks by Dr. Shailesh Kannur Asst. Professor. The event was attended by 60 Delegates from Department of General Surgery and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology which included Staff, Postgraduates and Interns.

CME Event Commemorating World Plastic Surgery Day”

As part of the celebrations for "World Plastic Surgery Day," the Department of Surgery organized a CME event on July 15, 2024, under the inspiring theme, "Transforming Lives, Restoring Hopes." The event took place in the Mini Auditorium, located on the 2nd floor of the Trauma Centre at BLDE DU Shri BM Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Vijayapura.

The formal function commenced with a prayer song, invoking divine blessings, performed by Dr. Vaishnavi. The inauguration ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp. Prof. Y. M. Jayaraj, Hon’ble Pro Chancellor of BLDE DU, delivered the inaugural address, elucidating the importance of plastic surgery in the modern world. Following this, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. R. S. Mudhol addressed the gathering, sharing his insights on the advancements in plastic surgery. Dr. Aravind V. Patil, Principal of BLDE DU, emphasized the critical role of plastic surgery in contemporary surgical practice. The session continued with an informative talk by Dr. Ravikumar K. Choudhari, a distinguished Senior Laparoscopic Surgeon and Professor at Al Ameen Medical College, recognized as one of the finest surgeons in Vijayapura. Dr. Choudhari was then honoured with a felicitation for his contributions in Surgical field. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Vijaykumar Huded, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event.

The event continued with an enlightening session where various speakers from different branches of surgery and medicine shared their expertise on plastic surgery. Dr. Vijayakumar Huded, Assistant Professor and Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at BLDE DU, introduced all the speakers and chairpersons for the sessions. The first speaker, Prof. Dr. Pradeep Jain, former Head of the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at IMS, BHU, Varanasi, delivered an insightful talk on the crucial topic of wound bed preparation. This session was chaired by Dr. M.B. Patil, Vice Principal of BLDE DU. Dr. Vijayakumar Huded then spoke on the topic, “What a Plastic Surgeon Does?”, providing an in-depth look into the multifaceted role of plastic surgeons. Dr. Ravikumar Choudhari chaired this session. Following this, Dr. Aniketan K.V., Assistant Professor, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, BLDE DU, presented an important talk on “Introduction and Local Flaps in Facial Reconstruction,” with Dr. Anand Zalki chairing the session. Dr. Anand Zalki, Senior consultant Surgeon, DNB Coordinator, DHV, enlightened the gathering with his talk on “Challenges for a plastic surgeon in a rural setup or government setup”. After a short tea break, the next session began with Dr. B.T. Badadal, Associate Professor and Consultant Neurosurgeon at BLDE DU, who provided an informative perspective on “Neuroplastic Approach - A Neurosurgeon’s Perspective.” This session was chaired by Dr. Girish Kulloli, Professor in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Shreepad Kulkarni, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics then discussed the “Role of Plastic Surgery in Orthopaedics,” a session chaired by Dr. Nishikant Gujar, Professor of Surgery at Al-Ameen Medical College. Finally, Dr. Sanmitra Aihole, Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology, spoke on “Dermatosurgery

A Cosmetic Approach,” with Dr. Santosh Nandi, Professor & HOD of the Department of Orthopaedics at BLDE DU, chairing the session. All sessions were followed with extensive question and answer sessions.

The function concluded with a valedictory ceremony, where Dr. Vijayakumar Huded proposed a vote of thanks. The event was attended by approximately 50 delegates from various departments of different medical colleges, 60 postgraduate students from different medical colleges in Vijayapura, and around 80 undergraduates. The program ended with tea and snacks.

Cadaver Laboratory Session was organized on “ANATOMY OF SPINAL CORD AND ITS SURGICAL IMPORTANCE”. The activity was conducted by the Staff members of Department of Surgery on 29/06/2024 (Saturday) between 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at Anatomy Dissection hall, Department of Anatomy of BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura.

The cadaver laboratory session was conducted for postgraduates of Department of General Surgery.Dr M.S.kotennavar Professor and HOD of General surgery and Dr. Dayanand Biradar, Asso. Professor, Co-Coordinator, welcomed Dr. Malappa Huggi Assistant Professor of Surgery and all the postgraduates of Department of General Surgery participated in the workshop.

Dr.Malappa Huggi. Asst. Professor of Department of General Surgery demonstrated in great detail with simultaneous interaction with Postgraduates. As it was a very interactive session, it was very helpful for the postgraduate students to grasp the concept and correlate with Basic anatomy of spinal cord, Anatomy vertebral column, Basics about tracts and ganglions. It was an eventful program.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Shivanand Kubsad Professor of Practice on “Rural Surgeon - An Overview”

The Department of General Surgery at BLDE (DU) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Vijayapura, organized a Guest lecture by Dr. Shivanand Kubsad on Wednesday June 26, 2024, from 3:15 pm to 4:30 pm. Dr. Shivanand Kubsad, a Consultant Surgeon from Mudhol Dist. Bagalkot and Professor of Practice at the Department of Surgery, delivered an insightful presentation titled “Rural Surgeon - An Overview.” The event was held in the Medical Education Unit Hall on the 2nd floor of the hospital building at BLDE (Deemed to be University) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre.

The session began with a warm Welcome note by Dr. M. S. Kotennavar, Professor and Head of the Department. Following this, Dr. R. S. Mudhol, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of BLDE (DU), addressed the gathering. Dr. M. B. Patil, Professor of Surgery and Vice Principal ( Clinical ), introduced Dr. Kubsad and chaired the session.

Dr. Shivanand Kubsad provided a comprehensive overview of surgical practice in rural areas, discussing the unique challenges faced by surgeons in these settings and the distinct aspects of being a rural surgeon. His talk was both informative and engaging, offering valuable insights to the attendees.

The session was attended by Dr. Tejaswini Vallabha, Dean Faculty of Medicine, RMO Dr. Ashok Taradi, Dr. M. S. Kotennavar, Professor & HOD, faculty members, postgraduates, and interns of the Department of Surgery at BLDE (DU) Shri B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre. A total of 40 members participated in the program, which proved highly beneficial for both staff and students.

Postgraduate Students of the Department of Surgery conducted the Skills Lab Work Shop smoothly and they assisted for the demonstration of various Gowning, Gloving, Knotting/Suturing Techniques. 26 Interns actively participated in the Skills Lab between 9-00 am to 5-00pm. e-certificates of participation were handed over to the participants and resource persons.

Workshop on “Latest advances, Applications (Mobile/Window/e-books) & Future in Surgery PART-1”

As a part of academic activity, Department of General Surgery conducted a Workshop on “Latest advances, Applications (Mobile/Window/e-books) & Future in Surgery PART-1” under the guidance of Dr. Deepak R. Chavan Assoc. Professor of Surgery & IT Head, on 3rd June 2024 at Department Seminar Hall, BLDE DU Shri B M Patil MCH & RC for all PG students and staff from 3pm-5pm.

The primary objective of the workshop was to educate students and staff on the recent advances in technology and how it can be integrated into surgical training.

SURGIQUIZ-2024 Finale

As a part of Academic activity, a Surgery Quiz known as SURGIQUIZ- 2024 Finale was organised by Department of General Surgery at Lecture Hall (4th Floor), Skills Lab building, BLDE DU for Final Year MBBS students (UG CBME 2020 Batch) on Saturday 18th May 2024 from 3 to 5 PM. Out of the all the students (158) who had participated in the Preliminary round, 15 students qualified for the Final round. They were divided into 5 Teams accordingly Team Dr. P.L. Kariholu, Team Dr. R.S. Kulkarni, Team Dr. B.C. Uppin, Team Dr. D.C. Patil, Team Dr. V.B. Reddy, as a tribute to the past Professors and Stallwarts of Department of General Surgery, BLDE DU Shri BM Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre.

Dr. M. S. Kotennavar, Prof and HOD Welcomed the gathering. The chief guest for SURGIQUIZ 2024 was Dr. Jilani Awati, Professor of Surgery and Medical Superintendent, Al Ameen Medical College Hospital, Vijayapura. The Quiz was coordinated by Dr. Manjunath Savant, Assistant professor and Dr. Shivaraj Mangyal, Senior Resident, Department of Surgery.  Dr. Deepak Chavan, Associate Professor Department of Surgery was the Quiz master. The Quiz had total of 5 rounds consisting of MCQ round, Clinical Scenario round, Video Round, Rapid Fire round and final round being Buzzer round. The Quiz competition was very interesting, informative and thrilling for the students. Both UG/PG Students and Faculty got benefitted, in the form of knowledge enhancement by the Quiz programme. The audience also actively participated in the programme. At the end of each round an audience question was asked and the correct respondents were awarded.

Team Dr. B.C. Uppin (Mr. Sajo Joseph, Mr. Sacheth Padumati, Mr. Amogh Lavate) won the SURGIQUIZ 2024 Finale followed by Team Dr. D.C. Patil (Mr. Aayush Parakh, Ms. Christu Narsinghani, Mr. Om Dhere), bagging Runner Up. Winners were awarded by the Guest of Honour, Dr. Jilani Awati and Runner Up by Dr. Tejaswini Vallabh, Professor, Department of General Surgery. Dr. Aravind V Patil, Principal and Dean, Faculty of Medicine addressed the Gathering and handed over the Certificates of Participation to all the participants. This was followed by Vote of Thanks by Dr. Manjunath Savant, Assistant Professor.

Dr. Ramakanth Baloorkar, Professor, demonstrated various types of .Dressings and bandages, various methods of Knotting and Suturing Techniques. Interns were given hands on training for IV Cannula , Ryle’s Tube and Foley Catheter Insertion on the Mannequins , various dressings and bandages and suturing/knotting techniques under supervision of Faculty and PGs of Surgery 5th Unit.

35 Interns actively participated in the Skills Lab and Cadaver Lab Workshop. Dr. S.Venkata Siddhartha, Dr. Krishna Prasad, Dr. Srihari, Dr. Rohan, Dr. Vaishnavi, Dr. Jeevan-PGs of Surgery Unit V, assisted for the smooth conduct of workshop.  E-certificates of participation were handed over to the participants and resource persons by HOD DR.M.B. Patil.

High tea was arranged.

(CANCER SCREENING) “FREE HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMP” ON 10-03-2024

As a part of the Extension activity of the Department ( Unit - V ), On the occasion of “ Shri Guru Gangadhareshwar Jatra Mahotsav – 2024”, a (Cancer Screening) Free health check-up camp was arranged on Sunday, 10/03/2024 at Karibantanal Village, Basavana Bagewadi Tq, Vijayapura.

The program was inaugurated by the dignitaries on the dias by watering the plant. Dr S.S Patil, Associate professor and Dr Shailesh Kannur, Assistant Professor gave lecture / Health Awareness to the patients and their attenders on prevention and management of Health problems. He stressed on early detection of the Cancer and informed the patients that on every Friday between 9-00amto 5-00pm there will be Specialty Clinic on every Friday at Surgery OPD.No:4. He had free interaction with all the patients.

In this program, a gathering of about more than 1000 members were present and availed Medical facilities from our Department.

“Skills Lab Work Shop” held on: 12/01/2024

As a part of Academic activity of the Department, “Skills Lab Work Shop” was arranged for Interns by Department of Surgery on 12-01-2024, saturday from 9-00am to 5-00pm, at Advanced Skills Laboratory of  BLDE (DU) Shri. B. M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Vijayapura.

Dr. Girish Kullolli Professor of Surgery and Dr. Dayanand Biradar gave Lectures and Demonstration on various Basic Surgical Skills and Hands on Training was given on manikins  to the Interns between 9-00 am to 5-00pm.

Dr. Rohan Garpure, Dr. Prasada Biradar, Dr. G. Saiteja Dr. Satvik Postgraduate students of the Department of Surgery conducted the Skills Lab Work Shop smoothly and they assisted for the demonstration of various Gowning, Gloving, Dressings, Knotting/Suturing Techniques, IV Cannula , Ryles Tube and Foley Catheter Insertion on the Manikins .30 Interns actively participated in the Skills Lab. e-certificates of participation were handed over to the participants and resource persons.

Cadaver Laboratory Session was organized on “HAND FLAPS”

Cadaver Laboratory Session was organized on “HAND FLAPS”. The activity was conducted by the Staff members of Department of Surgery on: 06/01/2024 (Saturday) between 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Anatomy Dissection hall, Department of Anatomy of BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura.

The cadaver laboratory session was conducted for postgraduates of Department of General Surgery. Dr. Dayanand Biradar, Asso. Professor, Co-Coordinator, welcomed Dr. Anikethan K V Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery and all the postgraduates of Department of General Surgery participated in the workshop.

Dr. Anikethan K V. Asst. Professor of department of surgery demonstrated in great detail with simultaneous interaction with Postgraduates. As it was a very interactive session, it was very helpful for the postgraduate students to grasp the concept and correlate with clinical aspect of the flaps like “Free flap,5 flap plasty, Cross finger flap, Thenar flap, Hypothenar flap, Radial Artery flap, Froin flap, Jumping man flap, Z plasty for release of contracture”. It was an eventful program.
