Overview

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Organs under the domain of urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs.

This was the first superspeciality department to be established in this esteemed institute in 1998.

We started MCh. Urology program in 2011 with 1 candidate and increased to 3 candidates per year since 2021.

Department has state of the art facilities and advanced equipments to deal with complex urological cases including the latest TFL (60 watt) Laser and Dornier Lithotripsy (ESWL).

Research

The Department of Urology aims to be involved in advanced scientific knowledge through translational research practices. A substantial inter-university collaborative study with Karnataka State University, Dharward, uses the FTIR method to analyse renal calculi, improving precision in treating stone disease in this region. In addition, the department is conducting eight ongoing research studies across urological disciplines, complimenting its dedication to clinical innovation and academic excellence.

  • Inter-university collaboration study with Karnataka University, Dharwad for analysis of renal calculi using FTIR method, which greatly facilitated and improved treatment of stone disease in this region.
  • 8 studies are on-going in various disciplines of urology.

Facilities

The Department of Urology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and cutting-edge technology to deliver comprehensive urological care. Facilities include a 60-watt TFL Laser, 4K Endocamera system, Dornier ESWL, flexible endoscopic instruments, and a dedicated Urodynamics Lab. The department also offers 24×7 emergency services for genito-urinary trauma, along with haemodialysis and modular OT support. A milestone achievement includes the department’s first successful renal transplant in December 2023—an initiative subsidized by the university to support economically challenged patients. The team routinely performs complex reconstructive and oncological procedures with high success rates.

Advanced facility to assess bladder function and diagnose complex urinary disorders.

Dornier ESWL (Lithotripsy)

Non-invasive shockwave technology used to break kidney stones without surgery.

Achievements

The Department of Urology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) has consistently demonstrated academic and clinical excellence. Dr. Siddangouda Patil, Dr. Vinay S. Kundargi, Dr. Santosh Patil, and Dr. Basavesh S. Patil have held prominent positions in state-level urological societies and contributed as organizers, judges, and moderators in conferences, CME programs, and mock exams. Their achievements reflect leadership in urological education, research, and surgical advancements, positioning the department as a hub of excellence in Karnataka.

Activities

The Urology department at BLDE(DU) is actively involved in wide range of academic and clinical activities. It organized Mch/DNB mock examinations at the state level at regular intervals, contributing significantly to PG training. The department has hosted and participated in national and international symposia, CMEs, and workshops on advanced topics such as robotic surgery and renal transplantation. Faculty members frequently serve as moderators, judges, and panelists at leading conferences like KUACON and SARS, promoting knowledge exchange and skill enhancement. The department also conducts guest lectures and awareness workshops in collaboration with institutions like Apollo Hospitals and KUA, further enriching the academic environment.
