DEPARTMENT OF

Overview

The Department of Pathology was established in 1986. The department was recognized for postgraduate studies in the year 1996. Currently, a total of 11 teaching faculty with 4 Professors, 4 Associate professors, 1 Assistant professor, and 2 Senior Residents are working in the department. There are 36 postgraduates cum tutors. Eight faculty members are recognized postgraduate teachers and one is a recognized PhD guide. The total number of non-teaching staff is 31.

Per year intake of MBBS seats is 200 and 13 MD seats per year for the postgraduate course. The department also runs a Histotechnology Technician course, a B.Sc. MLT course and two value-added courses. A 24×7 Hematology and Clinical Pathology laboratory caters to in-patients and out-patients. This laboratory is a referral centre for surrounding places. The postgraduates are trained in the field of: Histopathology, Cytology and Haematology, Blood banking and molecular biology including flow cytometry,Neonatal Autopsy techniques with reporting and histotechnology

Research

At BLDE(DU) Shri.B.M. Patil Medical College, the Department of Pathology is dedicated to advancing our understanding of disease through innovative research. Our multidisciplinary team leverages state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics, advanced imaging techniques, and comprehensive histopathological analysis to uncover the biological mechanisms behind various diseases. By integrating basic science with clinical insights, we strive to develop novel biomarkers and therapeutic strategies for early detection, accurate prognostication, and personalized patient care. Collaboration with other departments and external research institutions ensures that our findings translate into improved diagnostic and treatment options in clinical practice.

Facilities

At BLDE(DU) Shri.B.M. Patil Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, our Department of Pathology offers a comprehensive range of state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic and research facilities. Our core facilities include a cutting‑edge Research Lab, an educational Museum, specialized Histopathology, Hematology, Cytology divisions, and a fully‑equipped Blood Bank. These established divisions meet the diverse diagnostic needs of KLE Charitable Hospital, ensuring precise and timely analysis in clinical pathology. Additionally, our department features a dedicated autopsy room along with a specialized pediatric autopsy suite, which play a crucial role in quality control and advanced research. These facilities not only support accurate disease diagnosis but also contribute to ongoing research and academic excellence in pathology.

The cytology section of the Department of Pathology is a critical hub for early detection and diagnostic precision, offering a comprehensive suite of services such as Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)

The histopathological section of the Department of Pathology stands as a cornerstone of diagnostic excellence, providing comprehensive examinations of resected specimens.

Blood Bank

The Blood Bank section under the Department of Pathology plays a crucial role in patient care, providing a vital link between donors and those in need of blood products.

Hematology Section

The hematology section of the Department of Pathology is distinguished by its comprehensive diagnostic approach, offering a full spectrum of hematological examinations that include detailed analyses of urine and body fluids.
