The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was established in 1987 at Municipal Hospital under Dr.Mrs. M.L. Sholapurkar, Prof, & Head, and senior Gynaecologist Dr. Miss S.N. Desai and Dr. Mrs. R.A.Umarji. The department was shifted to the present premises in 1988 The undergraduate course started in 1986, and the department was recognized for Postgraduate studies in 1996. The department of OBG is a premier center of academic and medical center for the entire district. It is tertiary care center for all the obstetric emergencies catering the entire Bijapur district and the nearby district of Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Presently the department is headed by the able and dynamic leadership of Dr S R Bidri subordinated by highly dedicated faculty. We have a total faculty (6 Professors, 3 Associate professors, Assistant professors, and senior residents). The department has an intake of 15 postgraduates every year. The department has fellowship program in Urogynecology and High-risk pregnancy 2 seats per fellowship program. The department has PhD program, presently two of the faculties perusing it.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BLDE (Deemed to be University), under the visionary leadership of Dr. S. R. Bidri and a team of experienced faculty, is actively engaged in impactful clinical research alongside its academic and clinical pursuits. With an annual intake of 15 postgraduate students and specialized fellowship programs in Urogynecology and High-Risk Pregnancy, the department fosters a strong research culture from training to practice.
The department is proud to collaborate on prestigious international research initiatives funded by the WHO, Global Network, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. These collaborative efforts have significantly contributed to advancements in maternal and child health, and gynecological oncology. The department also supports research through its Ph.D. program, currently pursued by two faculty members, and regularly conducts value-added courses to enhance research skills among interns and medical staff. Hosting the KSOGA conference twice (2016 & 2023) reflects its commitment to academic excellence and leadership in women’s health research.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) is a recognized tertiary care center, serving not only Vijayapura but also the surrounding districts. Equipped with modern ICU and HDU facilities, the department is well-prepared to manage high-risk pregnancies and complex obstetric cases with utmost expertise. Specialized care in obstetric analgesia and fetal medicine is also offered to ensure comprehensive maternal-fetal wellbeing.
In Gynaecology, the department provides a full spectrum of services, including specialty clinics for Urogynaecology, Cancer, Infertility, Menopause, and Adolescent health. The unit is equipped with an advanced Hystero-laparoscopy system with Harmonics, enabling both diagnostic and operative procedures. Preventive screening, early diagnosis, and surgical management of gynecological cancers are integral components of the department’s patient-centric care.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) has consistently demonstrated excellence in clinical care, academics, and research. The department successfully hosted the prestigious Karnataka State Obstetric and Gynaecological Association (KSOGA) conference twice, in 2016 and 2023, bringing together experts from across the state to discuss advancements in women’s health.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology actively engages in a wide range of academic, clinical, and outreach activities to enhance learning, skill development, and community health. We proudly hosted the 33rd Karnataka State Conference – KSOGA 2025, offering a platform for knowledge exchange among professionals. Our department observes significant health days such as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health and conducts impactful events like the Walkathon for ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, promoting awareness and advocacy for women’s rights and health.
We regularly organize CME programs, guest lectures, webinars (including one on Pre-Birth Syndromes), and career orientation sessions for postgraduate students. In collaboration with the Family Planning Association of India, we conduct monthly tubectomy camps and daily ANC clinics at our Rural Health Centre in Ukkali. Additionally, hands-on surgical skill training is offered through the Johnson & Johnson Institute on Wheels, equipping students and practitioners with the latest techniques in women’s health procedures.
