Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura, has been serving as a center of mental health excellence since its establishment in 1986. Over the decades, the department has evolved into a robust academic and clinical training hub, committed to fostering mental well-being through comprehensive education and compassionate care.

The department offers both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, equipping future healthcare professionals with the skills and understanding needed to address the complexities of mental health. In 2020, the postgraduate program in MD Psychiatry was initiated, with an intake of 2 PG students per year. With a blend of experienced faculty, clinical exposure, and a focus on research and innovation, the department continues to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of psychiatrists while providing holistic mental health care to the community.

The Department of Psychiatry at BLDE (Deemed to be University) is actively engaged in impactful clinical and academic research aimed at enhancing understanding and treatment of mental health conditions. The department has successfully secured ICMR funding for postgraduate research, reinforcing its commitment to evidence-based psychiatric practice.

One of the department’s notable publications includes the longitudinal study on cognitive functions in COVID-19 recovered patients, published in the European Chemical Bulletin (2023), authored by Dr. Mekala Bhargava Swaraj, Dr. Santosh Ramdurg, and Dr. Shivakumar P. Chaukimath. The department also participated in a multicentric, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of KSM66 Ashwagandha in adults experiencing stress and anxiety, in collaboration with Ixoreal Biomed Pvt. Ltd., led by Dr. Santosh Ramdurg.

These initiatives demonstrate the department’s dedication to advancing mental health research that bridges clinical insight with community needs.

Achievements

The Department of Psychiatry has consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, clinical care, and research. One of our major research projects was funded by ICMR, highlighting national recognition of our research capabilities. Our faculty have published impactful studies in reputed journals such as the European Chemical Bulletin, showcasing pioneering work on cognitive outcomes in COVID-19 recovered patients. We are also part of multicentric clinical trials, such as the randomized controlled study with Ixoreal Biomed Pvt. Ltd., evaluating the efficacy of Ashwagandha in high-stress individuals. Our postgraduate scholars and faculty regularly present at national and international conferences, bringing accolades to the department and contributing to the evolving field of psychiatry.

Activities

The Department of Psychiatry at BLDE (Deemed to be University) actively promotes mental health awareness through a variety of engaging programs and initiatives. A series of informative talks were conducted across BLDE institutes, addressing key mental health topics. A notable Guest Lecture was delivered to the Bijapur Pharmacy Association on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Educational sessions on drug abuse and its consequences were also organized. In addition, the department marked important mental health observances including World Bipolar Day, Suicide Prevention Day, and Mental Health Awareness Week. Creative platforms like painting competitions for undergraduate students were also held to encourage open conversations about mental well-being.
