The Department of Paediatrics presently headed by Prof. Dr. M.M. Patil was instituted in 1986. The PG course was started in 1996. Neonatal Fellowship Programmes accredited by NNF started in 2021. We have total bed strength of 90 beds in general ward and also have 32 beds of Level III NICU and 12 Beds of PICU. The department also runs many Specialty clinics including High risk, Immunization, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Nephrology, Thalassemia, Pediatric Hematology, Pediatric Gastro (Diarrhea) and Pediatric Neurology. Recently BLDE Teen clinic has been added.
The faculty members are actively involved in various community programmes like RCH, IMNCI, Promotion of Breast Feeding. Our faculty members are also involved in research projects in collaboration with Global Network and WHO. The Postgraduate Alumni are doing very well and are well placed with many of them doing Post-doctoral courses and Fellowships. Many of the undergraduates have taken up Paediatrics as a Speciality and have got their PG Degree from prestigious institutions in India and abroad.

The Department of Paediatrics at BLDE (Deemed to be University) stands at the forefront of academic and clinical research, making impactful contributions to the field of child health. Over the last five years, the department has completed more than 100 research articles and authored 8 chapters in various nationally and internationally recognized medical textbooks, demonstrating its strong academic foundation and research-driven approach.
With an active postgraduate program, the department supervises around 10 dissertations annually, fostering a vibrant culture of research among young medical professionals. These research projects address a wide spectrum of paediatric health issues, aligning with global and local healthcare priorities.
The department is also deeply engaged in collaborative research across various levels—state, national, international, and district—particularly in the areas of paediatric care, epidemiology, and health systems improvement. Such partnerships have strengthened the department’s ability to deliver evidence-based solutions for child health challenges.
In addition, the department is actively involved in externally funded research projects, including two major studies under the World Health Organization’s Action I and II programs. It also leads innovative research through 22 institutionally funded projects, such as the A-Plus Pilot Study. These initiatives reflect the department’s commitment to advancing paediatric care through scientific inquiry, innovation, and collaboration.

Our Outpatient Department (OPD) offers specialized consultations and services, backed by experienced faculty and pediatric specialists dedicated to the holistic health of every child.
Our state-of-the-art NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) are designed to manage critically ill newborns and children with round-the-clock care, advanced life support systems, and a highly trained multidisciplinary team. These units ensure the highest standards in emergency and intensive pediatric care.
A fully functional pediatric ward provides inpatient services in a child-friendly environment, ensuring safety, comfort, and continuous monitoring for young patients. Complementing this care is the Amruthadhare Human Milk Bank, a vital initiative inaugurated on 7th April 2023.
In addition to core pediatric services, the department also operates various specialty clinics to address specific healthcare needs, ensuring early detection, preventive care, and long-term management of pediatric conditions.

Dr. S. Charki earned the SARS Gold Medal for an outstanding paper presentation in 2021 and was also awarded Researcher of the Year 2021 at Brain 2022, reflecting his strong research acumen.
Dr. Soumya was awarded a Gold Medal for her impactful paper presentation at Karpaedicon 2023, emphasizing clinical excellence and research.
Dr. Shubham presented his research at the prestigious 30th Annual Conference of the Intensive Care Chapter of IAP 2023, contributing to pediatric critical care advancements.
