Overview

The Department of Geriatrics has been sanctioned with two MD seats by National Medical Council in the Year 2021. However the Geriatric Clinic was already existing in our Hospital from the year 2007. It was the third Geriatric Clinic in Karnataka state operational at that point of time then.

It was started well before MCI had notified for mandatory Geriatrics clinic in all medical colleges back in 2011.

From year 2022 onwards, two students have taken admission in MD Geriatric Medicine.

Research

The Department of Geriatric Medicine is committed to advancing the health and well-being of the elderly through evidence-based research. The department undertakes clinical and community-based studies focused on age-related conditions such as dementia, frailty, polypharmacy, osteoporosis, and chronic disease management. Research initiatives emphasize improving the quality of life for geriatric patients, developing geriatric-specific treatment protocols, and promoting healthy aging practices. Faculty and postgraduate students are actively involved in interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects, contributing to national health programs and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals. The department is also working on integrating traditional and modern approaches to geriatric care, in alignment with national elderly healthcare goals.

Departmental faculty members are actively involved in academics and research. Faculty members have published - research articles in various national and international indexed journal with impact factors.

Facilities

The Department of Geriatric Medicine at BLDE (Deemed to be University) offers a range of facilities targetting to promoting the physical, mental, and emotoinal wellness of elderly patients. At the heart of our services is the Comprehensive Geratiric Checkup, which allows for a thorough evaluation and tailroed care planning. Dedicated Dementia and Immunization Clinics ensure specialized attention to age-related cognitive decline and preventive healthcare needs. Our Home Care services extend medical support to bedridden and home-bound elderly patients, while the Senior Citizens’ Library provides a space for intellectual engagement and leisure reading.

In collaboration with our community outreach initiatives, the department actively conducts Health Awareness Camps and extends Rural Health Services to underserved areas. We also promote meaningful end-of-life contributions through Posthumous Body and Eye Donation Programs, creating opportunities for social responsibility and medical advancement.

Achievements

The Department of Geriatric Medicine at BLDE (Deemed to be University) has made significant strides in elderly healthcare and community service. It has successfully implemented community outreach programs focused on dementia screening, immunization, and chronic disease management in rural areas. The department takes pride in pioneering initiatives like the Posthumous Body and Eye Donation Drive, receiving commendation from local health authorities and NGOs for its impact. Faculty members have actively contributed to national seminars and have been invited as guest speakers on topics related to healthy ageing, elder abuse prevention, and integrated geriatric care. These achievements reflect the department’s commitment to advancing elderly care and promoting healthy, dignified ageing.

Activities

The Department of Geriatric Medicine at BLDE (Deemed to be University) actively organizes and participates in a variety of academic and community-centered initiatives aimed at improving elderly health and well-being. Regular health awareness camps are conducted in rural and urban areas focusing on age-related conditions such as dementia, hypertension, diabetes, and mobility disorders. The department observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and World Alzheimer’s Day with public lectures, interactive sessions, and community outreach programs. Immunization drives for the elderly, including influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, are organized through the department’s Immunization Clinic. The department organizes workshops and training sessions for caregivers, medical students, and nursing staff aimed on elder home care and thorouh geriatric assessments. hese endeavours demonstrate a commitment to providing holistic, preventive, and compassionate healthcare for older adults.
