The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy is an integral part of Shri B M Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Center since its inception in 1986. The department offers UG (MBBS), PG (MD-DVL, 5 seats/year) and Fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology (2 seats/year) academic programmes.
We envision to be nationally recognized leaders in Dermatology and Cutaneous Sciences to the benefit of individuals and communities of Vijaypur and beyond.

The Department of Dermatology is deeply committed to advancing medical science through active academic research. With a remarkable total of 177 publications in PubMed-indexed journals, the department continues to make a significant contribution to global dermatological literature. In addition, our faculty members have authored numerous articles in other national and international indexed journals, further reflecting the department’s scholarly excellence.
Beyond publications, the department has edited 10 authoritative books and contributed 65 chapters to widely respected dermatology and pediatrics reference textbooks. This extensive body of work underscores our commitment to academic leadership, evidence-based practice, and continuous knowledge sharing in the field of dermatology.

The Department of Dermatology is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities offering a wide range of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic services beyond routine care. Our Laser Clinic, in collaboration with DEKA Lasers, Italy, is furnished with advanced technologies such as Linscan diode laser, Motus AX alexandrite laser, Spectra Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and eCO2 Fractional CO₂ laser, catering to procedures like hair reduction, scar revision, pigmentary disorder management, and tattoo removal.
Our Dermatosurgery and Aesthetic Dermatology Unit offers vitiligo surgeries including ultra-thin STSG, blister grafting, and punch grafting, along with chemical peels and aesthetic procedures. The department features a dedicated Dermatology Intensive Care Unit for managing dermatological emergencies and severe cases, as well as Biological Therapy options for autoimmune skin disorders.
We also provide Advanced Diagnostic Services for Genodermatoses in collaboration with the Human Genetic Centre, Bengaluru, and international partners. The Phototherapy Clinic is equipped with Narrowband UVB and Excimer therapy for conditions like vitiligo and psoriasis. Additionally, our Skin Imaging Unit features high-resolution hand-held and videodermoscopy (FotoFinder) technology for accurate diagnosis and monitoring of skin diseases.

The Department of Dermatology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) has been honored with multiple prestigious recognitions, reflecting its excellence in clinical practice, research, and academic contribution. We are proud to be designated as the Dermatology Centre of Excellence by the University [link to COE page], and also recognized as a Centre of Excellence in Dermatology by the Vision Group of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka, with a sanctioned research grant of ₹40 lakhs. In a major international collaboration, we have established the BLDE (DU)-DEKA Laser Academy (BDLA) in partnership with DEKA Lasers, Italy, further strengthening our global footprint in laser dermatology education and training.
In 2015, the department was honored as the “Best Department” by the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists – Karnataka Chapter, acknowledging our outstanding contributions. Our faculty members hold prestigious positions at national and international levels and are frequently invited as speakers, editors, and peer reviewers by renowned scientific journals and global conferences, further elevating the department’s reputation for academic and clinical excellence.
The Department of Dermatology at BLDE (Deemed to be University) remains actively engaged in academic and clinical enrichment through a variety of educational initiatives and collaborative programs. A landmark event was the inauguration of the BLDE (DU)-DEKA Laser Academy (BDLA) on 3rd December 2023, marking a new era of advanced laser dermatology training and international collaboration.
Continuing its academic momentum, the department organized a webinar on “Basics of Laser” on 26th January 2024, offering participants foundational insights into laser applications in dermatology. Further enhancing international academic exchange, an online guest lecture on Pediatric Dermatology, titled “Rashes in the Diaper Area in Infants and Children,” was delivered by renowned dermatologist Dr. Ravi Hiremagalore from the University of Alabama, USA, on 17th February 2024. These initiatives reflect the department’s commitment to staying at the forefront of dermatological education, research, and clinical excellence.
